What do you and your family do On ANZAC Day?
The way my family and me celebrate ANZAC Day is every year my family and me give poppies out to every one in my dad’s nursing homes. Each year we try to go to different nursing home and give out flowers. Once that had been done some years we might watch the ANZAC dawn service. We don't take a personal interest about ANZAC Day because we do not have any one what has fought in the war but we still commemorate it with the others.

Why is ANZAC day special to you and your family?
ANZAC day is not really significant to my family and me because we do not have any family members who have fought in the war It is still nice to remember all the people who fought for this country and who died for this country, and also to take a minute and appreciate what they have done for this country.

Kodendera Subayya Thimayya was born in Madikeri, the district town of Kodagu, in March 30, 1906. He was a commissioned officer of the British Indian Army in 1926. In 1948 he was one of the officers in the actions against the forces of Pakistan in the conflict over Kashmir. He became Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army in 1957. Thimayya was Chairman of the Neutral Nations' Repatriation Commission, which organised the transfer of Chinese and North Korean soldiers after the Korean War. His courage, leadership and fairness made him known all over the world. He retired from the army in 1961, only 15 months before the conflict with China in 1962. After the Korean War, General Thimayya was in charge of a United Nations unit dealing with the banishment of the prisoners of war. After his retirement from the Indian Army, he went on to command the United Nations peacekeeping force in Cyprus. While in Cyprus, he died of a heart attack, on December 18th 1965.

Field Marshal Kodendera Madappa Cariappa was born on 28 January 1899 in Coorg. After his education at Madikeri, he went on to study at the Presidency College, in Madras. Cariappa was one of the few selected for the first batch of King's Commissioned Indian Officers (KCIOs). He fought in Syria, Iraq and Iran from 1941-1942 and then in Burma from 1943-1944. He was the first Indian Officer to be given command of a unit in 1942. He went on to receive many awards in his distinguished career. K.M Cariappa was appointed as the first Commander-in-Chief of an independent Indian Army on 15 January 1949. He retired from the Indian Army in 1953, and served as India's High Commissioner to Australia and New Zealand. He was awarded the 'Order of the Chief Commander of the Legion of Merit' by American President, Harry S. Truman. The Government of India granted the rank of Field Marshal to Cariappa in 1983 giving him his name Field Marshal Kodendera Madappa Cariappa off. Later on while interviewing my dad he told me that he took care of Cariappa when he was ill. He then died on May 15th 1993, at the age of 94.

What did you learn from this task?
I learnt that two members form my family were involved in a war and one of them was chief in command and the other on was the Chief of Staff, which I found pretty amazing. I later on found out that my dad took care of the Chief in Command. I also learnt a lot more about the ANZACS, since I had no one who fought in World War I, I didn’t bother to learn about the ANZACS. It was really interesting to find out that ANZAC Day now is used for commercial purposes and that ANAZC Day is more celebrated rather than commemorated.

Have your views on ANZAC Day Changed?
At the beginning I had no views on ANZAC Day, I believed it was just a ceremony to commemorate the soldiers who fought In the War. The more I researched about Anzac day the more I found my self interested in them. Now i do believe that Australians are doing a good job in commemorating and remembering the sacrifices that the soldiers have made, but I also believe that we could do better job at commemorating ANZAC Day and not make ANZAC day into a celebration that is commercialised.
